Wood has been popular for millenia, so you can rule that out. Nuclear energy is a recent invention, so you can also ignore that. That leaves coal and petroleum. Coal gained widespread use during the Industrial Revolution, which lasted from the last 1700s (18th century) to early 1800s (19th century). For that reason, I'm leaning towards petroleum. Petrol really took off in the 20th century, but it started to gain attention long before that. It seems that the first refineries appeared around the 1850s or so, growing in size and importance over time.

for me i think it's wood because it says here: http://www.connerprairie.org/learn-and-do/indiana-history/america-1800-1860/19th-century-charcoal-making.aspx coal started during the first half of the nineteenth century but @Someguyfromcrowd has point also.. i'm not sure..
