what is the difference between denotative and connotative language

OpenStudy (kewlgeek555):

Denotation is the literal sense of a word, while connotation is its figurative meaning. The word dumbness for example, denotes "the condition of being mute," and it connotes "the condition of being stupid." Denotative refers to the literal meaning/definition of the word while connotative refers to the imagery or feelings you get towards the word.
