Calhoun was opposed to the Compromise because he believed in slavery. He felt that slavery formed a balance between the North and the South. He didn't want the South to have to give up their slaves. Webster defended the Compromise, even though he was against slavery, because he believed that the Compromise would unite the country. At first, the Compromise was unpopular. However, Stephen Douglas divided it into separate bills, and when each bill was introduced, it received majority approval. In this way, the Compromise was finally passed.
