Write an equation of the line perpendicular to the given line and containing a given point. Write the answer in slope intercept form. y=x;(4,-9) My brain got stuck at this..I'll probably get it once I see it.

OpenStudy (ranga):

The given line is y = x First what is the slope of this line?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Compare it to y = mx + b where m is the slope. What is m in y = x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I made both points zero and then put in the other points and put it on grid paper and then counted the rise/run and got -9/4...but I'm not sure if thats right...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If the equation of the line is y= x then the slope is 1, for a line to be perpendicular to the givne line the the slope will be the opposite reciprocal (-1 in this case. From the point (4, -9) use the slope of -1 to plot another point. When these two points are connected it should be perpendicular to the given line.

Oh okay, thanks! I dunno why I was making it harder than it is...
