what are reciprocals and what are they for?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a reciprocal is a fraction of 1/x or the inverse fraction that make the fraction in question equal to 1 example the reciprocal of 1/2 is 2/1 or 2 the reciprocal of 3 is 1 /3 reciprocal of 3/2 s 2/3 and visa vera

Alright. Icerose answered your 1st question. Now let me answer your 2nd question. :) Let say we have an equation: \[\large \large \frac{ 4 }{ 9 }x = 36\] To solve this equation, we can find the reciprocal of (4/9). The reciprocal of (4/9) is (9/4) (4/9) * (9*4) = 1. Since we multiply (9/4) to one side of the equation, we multiply it to the other side of the equation. 36 * (9/4) = 81

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

There's many more reasons, but this is a basic way we can use the reciprocal in terms of algebra.
