can someone help me with this word problem please.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Castel and Gabriella are selling pies for a school fundraiser.Customers can buy apple pies and lemon meringue pies. Castel sold 6 apple pies and 4 lemon meringue pies for a total of 80 dollars.Gabriella sold 6 apple pies and 5 lemon meringue pies for a total of 94 dollars. What is the cost of each of one apple pies and one lemon meringue pies.Btw i have to solve this using the elimination method

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a = cost of apple pie and b = cost of lemon meringue pie. There are some variables. Now we need to set up our equations.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6a+4b=80 and 6a+5b=94

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for elimination we have to eliminate a variable and it appears it will be easiest to do with the matching 6a.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We are going to need to make one of the 6a's negative though so when we add the two equations together we get rid of a.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we multiply one of the equations by -1. Let's do the first equation because the b variable is smaller and we'll get a positive variable. -1(6a+4b)=-1(80)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we have -6a-4b=-80 and 6a+5b=94.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add the two equations together to eliminate the a variable. -6a+6a=0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hold on huh i'm confused why do u multiply

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We want the 6a to be negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6a + 6a will just be 12a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We are pretty much subtracting the equations instead of adding them but technically you aren't supposed to subtract them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just think of it as 6a+4b=80 - 6a+5b=94

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1(6a+4b=80) + (6a+5b=94) is another way to write that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you subtract not add

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. I won't trouble you with this other non sense. Just subtract them :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you see what to do though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6a+5b=94 SUBTRACT 6a+4b=80. Line up your variables and subtract away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6a-6a=0 5b-4b=b and 94-80=14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we're left with the equation 0+b=14 or b=14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so we know lemon meringue pie costs $14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i subtracted them & got 1b=-14 is that right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Make sure you pay close attention to which variable has the larger number in front.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5b=94 - 4b=80. You want the larger variable first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll write out some steps for you c:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1. Identify the variables. What are you asked to find? (in this case cost of apple and lemon pie. 2. Create the equations. What info about the variables are you given? (Example: 6 apple and 4 lemon costs $80.) 3. Decide how to add or subtract them. Which equation is larger? (If you want a positive answer you want the larger one firsts. 6a+5b=94 was larger because 5b is larger than 4b and 94 is larger than 80. 4. Line up the variables. 6a + 4b = 80 -6a + 5b = 94 5. Solve the system you created. (b=14) 6. Substitute the variable found after simplifying (we didn't have to here) and solve. (6a + 4(14) = 80)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And wah lah! 6a + 56 = 80. 80-56=24 so 6a=24. 24/6=4 so a = 4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's some cheap apple pie :3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why is it negative & lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant it like subtraction sorry ahaha 6a + 4b = 80 Subtract 6a + 5b = 94

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the a's go together, the b's go together and the equals or totals go together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it's a=1b=14 something like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the a doesn't equal it. we got rid of the a for now by subtracting the 6a from the other equation. Think of variables like a block. You have 6 blocks. 6 blocks - 6 blocks = no more blocks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are left with one b block which equals 14 dollars. I guess one b pie

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now I have to do my school work. YARHARHARHARHAR! Enjoy the high seas, matey!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok thanks & have a goodnight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You too. Good luck with your future struggle.
