Culture is a big part of everyone’s life. It is an inescapable force that has continuously molds one's identity from their births to their deaths. In the film Bend it Like Beckham created by Gurinder Chadha, the protagonist Jessmindar Bhamra perfectly personifies the conflict between desire and obligation. Jess desires to live in the world of football but it is covered by an obligation to family values. A well execution of the film technique, foreshadowing allowed the audience to simply feel the trance of following the dream. In contrast, Chadha exposes the audience to the hardships and setbacks Jess endures as well as her family through the use of the film technique of shot reverse shot capturing the cause and effect of each choice. 18 year old Jessmindar “Jess” Bhamra is living in the western suburbs of London. Jess's Father and mother are Indian immigrants living in the United Kingdom. Jess's parents pushes her towards excelling academically in hope that she will achieve financial success and become a fine doctor. However, Jess's only dream is to become a professional footballer. In the film, Chadha starts off the movie with a foreshadow, the crowds are screaming the sportsman excitedly announces each move Beckham is making, predicting who he passes to then out of nowhere the sportsman announces Jess's name with surprise, as Jess’s heads the ball into the goal, and the crowd goes wild. The effects of the foreshadowing in the beginning allows the audience to exhibit just how passionate Jess is about football, it also gives the audience the capability to relate to Jess, setting the audience up to what comes next. The film switches its focus to a sports news show, with the male Caucasian anchors madly talking about how incredible Jess is and may become. This allows the audience to relate once again however, Chadha was not quite done yet. In that very moment Chadha combines foreshadowing with shot reverse shot when the anchor asks Jess’s mother, Mrs. Bhamra if she was proud of her daughter's success in football. Mrs. Bhamra priorities are far different from Jess's. Without holding back Mrs. Bhamra abruptly tells the anchor “not at all” she was not proud of her daughter's success. She continues to express her concern and beliefs. Mrs. Bhamra exclaims she should not be running around chasing a ball around the field showing her bare legs to 17,000 people. That Jess, is bringing shame upon her family and needs to go home. At that very moment, Chadha uses the film technique shot reverse shot to capture the clear difference between the beliefs of the Caucasian anchors and the traditional Indian mother. Switching back and forth of the Indian mother and the expressions of the Caucasians anchor, the audience can identify with the situation Jess's in. Torn between two cultures. Jess's parents hold religious beliefs and household duties in very high regard. After being discovered playing in a park by Juliet 'Jules', a female footballer. Jess decides to join a local woman team despite her parents disapproval, Jess persistently plays behind her parents backs with a fake job as an excuse for her daily disappearance with only her recently engaged sister 'Pinky' knowing the truth. All things is seemingly well until, Pinky's future mother in law mistakenly spots Jess and a Caucasian boy kissing (it is actually Jules laughing and leaning against Jess). Pinky's mother in law takes no time to ask questions and breaks the wedding off between her son and Pinky. Not knowing what is happening, Jess comes home to a surprise and disappointed family harshly being criticized by Pinky's ex fiance's mother. “All I know is that, children are a map of their parents.” Pinky's ex fiance's mother states as Chadha uses a shot reverse shot to compare both parent's reaction to the false news pertaining to Jess. The audience is able to exhibit the desperation of Jess's parents in attempt to save Pinky's wedding and to be able to see the importance of conservation of their culture through Pinky's ex fiance mother's reaction. By using that film technique in this situation the audience is given a deeper understanding of the family's values and just how much the family can be effected by the slightest act of any action that is frowned upon. Out of anger, Pinky blurts out Jess's secret. Once again Chadha uses shot reverse shot to capture the cause and effect of the problem Jess is creating by following her dream. The shot reverse shot is between Jess's parents, and pinky and herself. Creating an other rateable situation for the audience. Although this time, the situations allows the audience to exhibit a sneak peak of Jess's family cultural beliefs when the mother says, “what have I done in the past life to deserve this?” The audience is able to conclude that her beliefs include karma. Stating the fact that Jess has gone behind her parent's back just as Pinky has done in the past, we as the audience can think that it is bad karma that has been bestowed on Mrs. Bhamra as she proclaims. With that said, the evidential text goes right back to the obstacle Jess is facing in order to follow her dreams. In this case, the obstacle is Jess's family's values and at that very moment the audience is able to fully now comprehend the foreshadowing in the beginning of the film when Jess's dream and her family's value have finally collided. With the use of shot reverse shot, Chadha expresses the definite collision between desire and obligation which Jess must face and make a life changing decision. After, the first collision between Jess's dream and family values she still then overlooks the importance of religious beliefs and household duties to her parents by continuing to attend football matches. Though, one day when Jess pretends to be ill to attend a football match. Without her knowledge her father had followed her and watched her play for the first time. For a split moment of time Jess's father, Mr. Bhamra had seemed to start warming up to the idea of Jess playing football however the warmth became cold once again after Mr. Bhamra witness her daughter and her coach “Joe” hugging after the game. The use of shot reverse shot in this situation between Jess's father, and Jess and Joe. Chadha was able to express the difference of importance between of the two taboos considered by her family's culture. The audience is able to perceived that having a relationship with a ethnicity out of her family is even more shameful then following her dream. With an anxiety and nervous Jess, Mr. Bhamra and Jess returns home to find Pinky's ex fiance and his family sitting in their living room. Pinky's fiance’s mother had gave in to her son whom had talked to his parents about the misunderstanding. Pinky's wedding was back on. All was well with Pinky but not with Jess, the wedding was on Sunday the 25th the same day as her big football tournament. Chadha continues to use shot reverse shot to emphasis the the collision between Jess's dream and family values. When Jules had come to visit her and talk to her about the tournament. The shot reverse shot between Jess and Jules gave the audience an impression on just how much of Jess’s family culture effects her decisions in life. Finally, the time of Pinky's wedding and the tournament day has come. Jess participates in the wedding without showing the slightest smile. With a change of heart, Jess's father allows Jess to attend the the tournament only wishing his daughter to be happy. Jess rushes to the tournament feeling pretty good after obtaining her father's approval. When Jess arrived at the tournament her team was losing. She gets into the game and already the game starts to turn in their favor. A clean pass to Jules and Jules scores. The game was fast paced and just when Jess was about to shoot the other team made a grave mistake. The opposing team fouls, giving Jess's team the opportunity to win it all. A penalty shot. Jess's penalty shot. At this moment this was the deciding factor of the match and her pursuit in life. The ball is placed 13 feet in front of the goal, players from both team line up in front of the goal. All the shot reverse shot and foreshadowing was a build up to this, the last significant combination of foreshadowing and shot reverse shot that will mark the visible line of the choice between desire and obligation. As Jess gets behind the ball, she looks at the goal, then the ball, then the goal but what she sees was not the players but females of her family who prioritize marriage and household duties. The effect was to symbolize what is blocking Jess's dream, her family. The use of shot reverse shot presented Jess's realization of what it means in order to follow her dream. She would have to neglect a few family values. She takes the shot and bends it like Beckham. In Bend it like Beckham, the execution of the film technique, foreshadowing allowed the audience to experience the journey of following the dream. In contrast, the use of the film technique shot reverse shot exposes the audience to the hardship and setbacks Jess endures as well as her family, capturing the cause and effect of each choice. In the end, Jess follows her dream despite all the past rejection she climbs the hurdles and persisted through the obstacles. Despite being torn between two cultures she separates herself and accepts what it means to follow her dream.
