Which point lies on the graph of the following piecewise function? y = x – 1 if x < 2 y = x^2 if x >= 2 (–1, 1) (1, 1) (2, 1) (3, 9)

OpenStudy (clairexiaoke):

I've tried to solve this question several times, and I found that both (2,1) and (3,9) apply to the answer, so I don't know where I've done wrong on this one

This question is asking you to look at each (x,y) pair and see which of the 4 pairs "works" in your function. To test an (x,y) pair, you do the following: pick an (x,y) pair to test. Let's try the first pair (-1,1) look at the x value (the first number). x is -1 now look at your function the first line says y = x – 1 if x < 2 that means, if x (of your pair) is less than 2, use this line x is -1 and -1 is smaller than 2. We use this line: y = x – 1 replace the x with -1. that means "erase the x" and write in -1: y = -1 - 1 simplify: -1 - 1 is -2 y= -2 now does y= -2 (from the function) match y=1 (from the pair) ? NO. that means (-1,1) is not the answer. now try the other pairs, doing the same thing...
