Passing through (6, 2) and perpendicular to y = 3x – 4 I am having a test on this thing tomorrow and I'm still confuse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

help me plz !!!

OpenStudy (nikato):

ok, so whats the slope of that equation^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3 ?

OpenStudy (nikato):

yes, and what do we know about the slope of the perepndicular line if the original is 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it have to be negative

OpenStudy (nikato):

and?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since you are looking for a perpendicular line, we will need the negative reciprocal of the slope of the equation given. All that is saying is, "flip" the slope and change the sign. The negative reciprocal of 3, or 3/1 is -1/3 (you see how I flipped the slope and changed the sign) do you understand so far ?

OpenStudy (nikato):

its gonna be the negative recipricol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it y= -1/3 - 4

OpenStudy (nikato):

and then u can use the point slope formula. and plug the new slope and the coordinates (6,2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or you can use the slope intercept form and solve for b, because you already know the slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2= -1/3 - 4 ?

OpenStudy (nikato):

|dw:1385266820194:dw| its actually +4
