Can someone please look at the attached picture and tell me if there is a typo or is there a p that I have to find? :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

They are probably referring to "p" when you write the equation of a parabola in this way: \[ (x – h)^2 = 4p(y – k) \] "p" will be the distance between the focus and the vertex. (h,k) is the location of the vertex

OpenStudy (phi):

try to match that form to your problem \[x^2 = 12y \] in your case h=0 and k=0

OpenStudy (phi):

do you notice that 4p matches up with 12 can you figure out what p is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would p be 3? because you divide 4p by 12 and you get 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, p = 3 btw, tagging does not work very well. It seems to take a long time (if ever) for your message to show up.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry :o

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you SO much for all of your help! i thought it was a typo!

OpenStudy (phi):

you would solve this by saying 4p= 12 divide both sides by 4 \[ \frac{4p}{4} = \frac{12}{4}\\ p = 3\]

OpenStudy (phi):

*** sorry :o **** no need to be sorry... just warning you that people are not ignoring you... they are not getting the message that you posted an update.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you very much for everything :)
