OpenStudy (karatechopper):

Give the genotype of each of the parents in each of the following. i. A gray, normal male mated with a gray, normal female produce 38 gray normal, 15 gray waltzers, 11 white normal and 4 white waltzers. ii. A gray, normal male mated with a gray, normal female produce 38 gray normal, 15 gray waltzers, 11 white normal and 4 white waltzers. iii. A gray, normal male mated with a white, waltzer female produces 8 normal, 7 gray waltzers, 9 white normal and 6 white waltzers. I would like to check my work :)

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

i. GGNn x ggNn ii. GgNn x GnNn iii. GgNn x ggnn

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

looks cool to me besides that I haven't seen any gray person out there

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

Its for mice haha

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

But is it correct? I really need to get my grade up in Bio

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I know it is LAUGHING OUT LOUD

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

do you use punnetts? they kind of help visually, but you can also use algebra

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

how do I use algebra?

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

Yes we use punnets btw but I don't want to go through making so many squares

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

it's why I use algebra

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

So..how do u do that.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

example: generic problem (A+b) (a+b) = Aa + Ab + ab + bb a typical color-blindedness problem where father is cy and mother Cc (Xc+y) (XC+Xc) = XcXC + XcXc + XCy + Xcy results Cc are female with normal vision cc female colorblind Cy male with normal vision cy male color blind ratio would be 1/2:1/2 female normal to color blind and 1/2:1/2 male normal to color blind

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

the concept applies to dihybrid-crosses as well and it gets a little complicated, and some proper statistical methods are used

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

O.o I'm not following..

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

@abb0t he just finished genetics and might be able to explain it to you a little clearer

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

Oh ok!

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

just as you represent letters with traits, the same goes with regular algebra problems when you assign x's and y's and z's to a particular thing

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

Ok. thanks tho nin! But ur sure that my answers are correct?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

i have to go to school, and if you don't get help when I come back home later tonight, I'll show you the solution

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

That works :)
