Find the vertex of the parabola and indicate if it is a minimum or maximum for the function f(x) = -5(x + 6)2 - 5

OpenStudy (shamil98):

Your equation is in vertex form y = a(x-h)^2 + k (h,k) are your vertex coordinates.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

minimum or maximum? How can I tell?

OpenStudy (shamil98):

a < 0 so the graph as a minimum of -5

OpenStudy (shamil98):

if a > 0 then the graph has a maximum

OpenStudy (shamil98):

it occurs when x = - 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its a minimum?

OpenStudy (shamil98):

Oh oops, I did the wrong way. if a > 0 its a minimum if a < 0 its a maximum sorry. i mixed them up.

OpenStudy (shamil98):

it s maximum when x = -6
