How is a cross-sectional area (in physics) different from a surface area?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The cross section is a hypothetical area measure around the target particles of the substance (usually its atoms) that represents a surface. The surface area is the sum of all the areas of all the shapes that cover the surface of the object.
