(2x^3-4x^2+5)+(-x^2-3x+1)

Just add the like terms. So there is only one cubed term, 2x^3 so we leave that as it is. Add the two squared terms so we ed up with -4x^2 + -x^2 = -5x^2 Now the x terms which there are only one of so we leave it alone as -3x. Finally the plain numbers 5+1 which = 6. Now we bung them all together to get 2x^3-5x^2-3x+6
