A number is increased by 25% and the resulting number is then decreased by 20%. the final number is what percent of the original number? -I used 100 as my original number, and when i increased it by 25% i got 125. when i proceeded to decrease that by 20% i got 105. that would put the final number being over 100% of the original number

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

You can't decrease 125 by 20... that isn't 20%

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Number n, n*1.25 is increasing it by 25% (n*1.25)*0.8 is decreasing it by 20%. simplify that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did you get 0.8

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Decreasing something by x% is the same as finding (100-x)% of it... convert that to a decimal. Decrease by 30%? multiply it by 0.7 Decrease by 90%? multiply by 0.1
