What is the chemical name for NH3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NH3 is ammonia

OpenStudy (kainui):

Also you'll run into stuff like NH4+, which is ammonia with another hydrogen. They call this Ammonium and the name seems really similar and can be confusing. But really the name is useful. See, hydrogen by itself (with no electrons) is just a proton, which as we know is positive. So you add that to anything, and overall what you get is positive. That's where the -ium suffix comes into play. Pretty much everything that ends with -ium is positive, it's sort of a convenient general rule to remember. So if I told you I had two compounds, Pyridine and Pyridinium, almost identical compounds but one has an extra hydrogen, which one has the hydrogen? If you can't answer this, quickly reread the top part I wrote. =D
