need help graphing y = -2x - 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2 is your slope and -1 is your vertical shift.

thank u

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Now for the graphing: I'd suggest you mark and identify the y-intercept, which is the point (0, -1). Note how Alice's -1 represents the y-intercept of your line.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

With (0,-1) graphed, plot another point which will be on the line. Your slope is -2, which can be written as -2/1, meaning that if the "run" is 1, the "rise" is 2 (actually, that's a drop).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So: from (0, -1), move your pencil 1 unit to the right (your "run") and then 2 units down (your "rise"). You'll now be at (1, -3). Repeat this process if you want a third point. Then draw a straight line through your two (or more) points.
