If a triangle has sides that measure 4, 5, and 9 inches, it is an Obtuse Triangle

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

it is not a triangle.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

One side has to be less then the sum of the remaining 2 and 9 is not less than 4+5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SolomonZelman is right. Try to draw it. Draw the base of the triangle 9 units long. Then draw a 4 unit side start from the left and a 5 unit side starting from the right. There would be a gap. The sides couldn't possibly meet. The rule is called the triangle inequality.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would just be a line.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Well it wouldn't be a line either.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

It would be 3 separate lines, that can't be attached all together.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't they sit on top of each other?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Well whatever it could be, it WON'T be a triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True. I get that there would be a gap if you angle them up, but if you do join the two sides, they would touch. It's just that you'd have a line of 9 inches on top of a line of 9 inches I think. So it wouldn't be a triangle, it would look like a line.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

3 sides out of 3 will touch. they won't be connected as a circuit (together) though...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thanks.
