We don’t need Merlin’s magic to change education in America. Instead, we could simply put technology to work for us. With computers, all learning could be done at home. Computers can help provide better learning activities. When learning from home, students also can use real-world events to help gain understanding. The entire academic community could flourish using this proposed plan. 2 If communities built fewer schools and hired fewer teachers, school systems could use the money saved to purchase computers for each student. Students could learn through satellite teaching. This could help aid state-funded schools, by having one teacher instruct hundreds of students at the same time. Just turn on the computer, and there would be the lesson for the day. Students could use e-mail to turn in their homework assignments and inquire about lessons. The Internet could supplement or even replace the school media center because finding research material for a term paper would be a piece of cake. 3 It is also easier for students to take advantage of real-world experiences when learning at home. Students can travel to museums, art galleries, theaters, and laboratories at will. They can apply what they learn directly to the real world and gain a better understanding of the concepts being taught. Although students already take field trips, these planned trips are infrequent, usually because of budget constraints. The cost for transportation adds to the problem. In addition, the large number of students per classroom makes taking field trips difficult to coordinate. If learning occurred at home, students could take advantage of many more real-world opportunities. For students learning at home, the world is their classroom. 4 Parents, teachers, and students are sure to love learning at home. Teachers would have significantly less work, and parents could take a more active role in their children’s educations. Electronic learning and more real-life learning experiences will improve student performance tenfold. Many communities across the nation are reporting high success rates. Consider this proposition today; it’s a win-win situation for all.
