the second equation is not clear. can you use the Equation button below the reply box and retype the second equation
OpenStudy (anonymous):
1 divided by 32 times x squared
OpenStudy (ranga):
the times looks like x. use * instead.
OpenStudy (ranga):
x^2 +4y^2 = 100 (1)
y = x^2/32 (2)
cross multiply (2)
32y = x^2
put x^2 = 32y in (1)
32y + 4y^2 = 100
4y^2 + 32y - 100 = 0
divide each term by 4
y^2 + 8y - 25 = 0
solve the quadratic equation.

Use this formula to solve for y: \[\Large \frac{ -b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2} - 4ac} }{ 2a }\]
OpenStudy (ranga):
yes.
OpenStudy (ranga):

but your negative y above was wrong.
OpenStudy (ranga):
yes.
OpenStudy (ranga):
Yes. Coefficients of x^2 and y^2 have opposite signs and that means it is a hyperbola.
OpenStudy (ranga):
you are welcome. you too. :)
