Where do toxins go after being processed by the liver? Do they go back into the bloodstream?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

i guess yes...the toxins are broken down...made into a more safer and water soluble form and released into blood stream and then maybe eliminated...

OpenStudy (aaronq):

toxins are biotransformed and filtered by the kidneys

OpenStudy (aaronq):

but yes, back into the blood

OpenStudy (gtxmuqsit):

toxins are converted into simpler form in liver to reduce it's impact. e.g ammonia to urea. (ornithine cycle). @maud101

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm. Does the blood go from the liver to the kidneys and then the general circulation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't imagine that it would be good to have toxins flowing through the general circulation.

OpenStudy (gtxmuqsit):

yeah blood then goes to kidneys .

OpenStudy (gtxmuqsit):

Blood contains a lot mild toxins like urea and pigments like bilurubin. @maud101

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So if I am processing my bio notes correctly, nutrient-rich blood flows from the small intestine to the liver, and then to the kidneys for filtration and reabsorption? Or am I out of order in terms of blood flow?

OpenStudy (gtxmuqsit):

yeah you are right I guess :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay. And after the kidneys, to the general circulation?
