OpenStudy (shelby1290):

my question is related to modelling with algebra the sum of two numbers is 46. One number is 12 more than the other. what are the numbers ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why not guess? 20 and 32 don't work, because 20 + 36 = 56 try a slightly smaller pair

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

@satellite73 can you give me some steps?

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

where did you get 20 and 32 from

OpenStudy (shelby1290):

or are you telling me to solve this using trial and error

Directrix (directrix):

Let x be one of the two numbers. The other number is x + 12 because -->One number is 12 more than the other x + (x + 12) = 46 --> because the sum of two numbers is 46 Solve x + (x + 12) = 46 for x to get one of the two numbers. Then, add 12 to what you get for x to get the second number. @shelby1290
