True or False? Mutations are the source of all new genetic material in a species?
What do you think?
true?
The jury is out. I could make a compelling case for true. Ultimately, there was some organism from which all different species today evolved. That original organism had DNA (or maybe RNA, to satisfy the theorists) - but whatever kind of genetic material it had, all the different genes and variations in sequences that separate different species result in sequential changes from that original organism. I could make an equally compelling case for false. Bacteria are quite good at transferring and trading genetic material between different individuals in a colony. They literally stick each other with tiny straws and squirt new DNA and genes into each other. So as individuals they most definitely do acquire new genetic material directly from each other rather than through mutations. It is a very badly worded question.
Yes I agree ... it depends on what kind of new genetic material this question is referring to ... Does it mean the creation of new protoplasm or is it a completely changed genetic material from an orginal cell ?
Badly phrased question indeed . Confusing ...
I dont know, thats why I came on because that exactly what my question says
In general terms, I think the answer should be True.
