How do you find the perimeter of a triangle with an unknown side length?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Like this triangle...

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

use the pythagorean theorem to look for the length of the hypothenuse (you have a right triangle)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the perimeter?

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

then add all the sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep that is what you do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Took it right outta my head.Gj nincompoop

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you explain how I would do that? @nincompoop or @jigglypuff314

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

(missing side)^2 = 12^2 + 6^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok the a is squared and the b is squared to equal the c squared like 12*12+16*16=c2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 144+256= the c squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, now I'm getting confused...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the missing side is 20

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

(missing side)^2 = 12^2 + 16^2 so missing side = √(144 + 256) = √(400) =

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do u understand now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the missing side squared equals, 12 squared plus 16 squared? And this will give me the answer? So the missing side is 20.

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yep :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

the perimeter = all sides added up = 12 + 16 + 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but un have to divide 400 by the square root to find it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks you both! I believe I understand now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ur welcome
