Solve this system of equations using any method. 3x – y = 4 2x + y = 11
A. (3, 8) B. (3, 5) C. (5, 1) D. (5, 11)
Use the substitution method or the canceling method (not the accurate names) but substitution method is isolating x or y for one of the equations and plugging it into the other. Canceling is similar to adding the systems together and manipulating it to canceling out variables so you will only have one variable. For example, x + y = 9 and -x + y = 7. If you add them, you can get 2y = 16 making y = 8. From there, you can do a substitution in which you plug the y into either equation to find x. (x = -1)
hmm
Or you can always plug and chug the multiple choices and see which one is true.
add them to get 5x = 15, so x = 3 and from either equation find that y =5. The trick is to change one equation if needed so that when you add the two, either the x term or the y term goes away, and you solve easily for the one that is left.
