Substitution method means you substitute one variable for the other. So first, we need to isolate one variable. x+5y=3 -5y on both sides x = 3 -5y So now, we'll put the value of x, in the other equation. The value of x is 3-5y. 2(3-5y) +9y = 4 Multiply out the 2 6-10y+9y =4 6-y = 4 Now let's add y to both sides 6=4+y And subtract 4 from sides. y=2 Now, we have to use the value of y to get the value of x. We can do this by plugging in 2 for y in our original x equation. x=3-(5(2)) x=3-10 x=-7 So the answers are y=2 and x=-7. You can double check this by plugging them in both equations that were originally given. (-7) + 5(2) = 3 -7+10 = 3 3=3 Which is true
