How do I find X in this triangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This triangle...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not looking for an answer I just want to know how to do this problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: use sine of 45 degrees

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember, sine is opposite over hypotenuse

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry but I am not familiar with the term sine. I have not learned that yet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exlain?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Have you studied trigonometry?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I am in geometry right now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmm...

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

You wanna look for the missing side lengths that you wanna find. The misiing side lengths are in here asps of the hypotenuse and the adjacents. Since we know that that is the cosine, we can write something like cos(60)=adjacent/hypotenuse=x / 4 U wanna now plug that into ur calculator and whatever the cos will equal to that will be multipled by 4 to get u what x equals to.

OpenStudy (nikato):

I know so its a right isosceles triangle , right..

OpenStudy (nikato):

And there's a a theorem that says if the two congruent sides are lets say a

OpenStudy (nikato):

Then the base is "a " root 2

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

But I think that using trignometry is the easiest way to find ur answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do I find the answer using geometry?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I don't have any idea except for geometry :) I would keep trig as a shorthand method. I mean if you can grasp it, them there u go!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think @nikato might have the best way for @asher1027

OpenStudy (nikato):

So using that theorem and think x=4 root 2

OpenStudy (nikato):

That's a geometry theorem^ just letting u know

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

There is sine cosine and tangent . So each have formulas. I can't give u each description cuz I really don't know what they means Ina triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry but I am lost. :/ @nikato Do you mean x=4^2?

OpenStudy (nikato):

No, 4 square root of 2

OpenStudy (nikato):

Btw, just asking are u in public school?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I am home schooled.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@asher1027 Really? I was homeschooled too!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@HomeschoolGrad Nice! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@HomeschoolGrad I kind of figured that out due to your name. haha

OpenStudy (nikato):

Haha^ @asher1027 do you get it now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I believe I do. @nikato So would I be correct in saying that 4 √(2) is my answer?

OpenStudy (nikato):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awesome. Thanks!
