y=x^2+6x-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you want to do with the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for x?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to use quadratic formula to find the x intercepts. i don't get how to do it at all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know what the quadratic formula is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have a super slight idea of the concept. that's all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm, we need more info. What's the value of y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For ax2 + bx + c = 0, the value of x is given by: the formula... x=-b(+-)sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a you need y values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well that's all the info i got on my question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have b and c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nevermind you dont need y values

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your equation looks like this ax2 + bx + c = 0, what you need to do is identify what your c and b is in your equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then once that is done, you can plug it into the quadratic equation, which looks like this x=-b(+-)sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so like 6x would b and c is -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

close, sorry you need an "a" value as well. Your A would be 1, b would be 6 and c is -2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i see.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The quadratic equation looks like this x=-b(+-)sqrt(b^2-4ac)/2a, can you try plugging in the values?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the x intercepts is when y =0 so all you are doing is solving the equation for zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i just set it all to equal to 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you can set it equal to x since thats what youre trying to find.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yea what he said

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats accurate, you can set it equal to zero and just solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=-6+sqrt 6^2-4(1)(-2)/2(1) would it look like that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or am i really wrong?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats correct, except after the -6 it should be the plus or minus symbol. Now all you need to do is Solve for X. do the things inside the squareroot first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 22?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or i mean 4.69? I am not sure i did that the right way.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 3(+-) sqrt(11)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i see what i did wrong..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok good!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is this all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for now thank you. (:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

medal? :D
