April, Brandon, Cara and Damian are sightseeing in a city that can be represented by a coordinate plane with the y-axis running north and south and the x-axis running east and west. Each friend started at the origin and walked in different directions, as is described below. Match each person with the ordered pair that represents their final location. April walked 5 blocks west and 5 blocks south. Brandon walked 5 blocks north and 5 blocks east. Cara walked 5 blocks east and 5 blocks south. Damian walked 5 blocks north and 5 blocks west.

please help i need it

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

For April, walking 5 blocks west is like having an x-coordinate of -5. 5 blocks south is like having a y-coordinate of -5. Make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

They all start at (0,0). North is in the positive y direction, South is negative y. Similarly, East is positive x direction, West is negative x.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok ok but i dont have any graph paper

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

That's ok. You don't have to use graph paper. Can you draw a coordinate axis on a plain sheet of paper?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

You don't really even have to do that. I just thought it might be helpful.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Just start out with April. She walks 5 blocks west. We said that west is in the negative x direction. So she has an x-coordinate of -5.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

She also walks south. That will not change her x coordinate, only y. Since she walks 5 blocks south, her y coordinate is -5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i got it thanks

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

So, her ending coordinate is (-5,-5) in the form (x coordinate, ycoordinate)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Awesome, no worries.
