Camelot," "iron clothing," and "steeds were prancing" are allusions to high Roman society. the time Miniver lives in. the time of medieval knights. the modern time period.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Miniver Cheevy" by Edwin Arlington Robinson Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn, Grew lean while he assailed the seasons; He wept that he was ever born, And he had reasons. Miniver loved the days of old When swords were bright and steeds were prancing; The vision of a warrior bold Would set him dancing. Miniver sighed for what was not, And dreamed, and rested from his labors; He dreamed of Thebes and Camelot, And Priam's neighbors. Miniver mourned the ripe renown That made so many a name so fragrant; He mourned Romance, now on the town, And Art, a vagrant. Miniver loved the Medici, Albeit he had never seen one; He would have sinned incessantly Could he have been one. Miniver cursed the commonplace And eyed a khaki suit with loathing; He missed the medieval grace Of iron clothing. Miniver scorned the gold he sought, But sore annoyed was he without it; Miniver thought, and thought, and thought, And thought about it. Miniver Cheevy, born too late, Scratched his head and kept on thinking; Miniver coughed, and called it fate, And kept on drinking.

YOU don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer; but that ain't no matter. That book was made by Mr. Mark Twain, and he told the truth, mainly. There was things which he stretched, but mainly he told the truth. That is nothing. I never seen anybody but lied one time or another, without it was Aunt Polly, or the widow, or maybe Mary. Aunt Polly -- Tom's Aunt Polly, she is -- and Mary, and the Widow Douglas is all told about in that book, which is mostly a true book, with some stretchers, as I said before. Now the way that the book winds up is this: Tom and me found the money that the robbers hid in the cave, and it made us rich. We got six thousand dollars apiece -- all gold. It was an awful sight of money when it was piled up. Well, Judge Thatcher he took it and put it out at interest, and it fetched us a dollar a day apiece all the year round -- more than a body could tell what to do with. The Widow Douglas she took me for her son, and allowed she would sivilize me; but it was rough living in the house all the time, considering how dismal regular and decent the widow was in all her ways; and so when I couldn't stand it no longer I lit out. I got into my old rags and my sugar-hogshead again, and was free and satisfied. But Tom Sawyer he hunted me up and said he was going to start a band of robbers, and I might join if I would go back to the widow and be respectable. So I went back. (Excerpt from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain) The narrator could be characterized as an academically minded adult. adopted teenager. adventurous orphan. out-of-work detective.

If a physician of high standing, and one's own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression -- a slight hysterical tendency -- what is one to do? My brother is also a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing. So I take phosphates or phospites -- whichever it is, and tonics, and journeys, and air, and exercise, and am absolutely forbidden to "work" until I am well again. (Excerpt from "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman) In a modern translation, the phrase "phosphates or phospites - whichever it is" might be replaced with medication. phospholipids. therapy. tonics. @bobbie21995

I would have go with phospholipids

A horseman slowly ascended the trail. In the fresh, open face of the new-comer Mr. Oakhurst recognized Tom Simson, otherwise known as "The Innocent" of Sandy Bar. He had met him some months before over a "little game," and had, with perfect equanimity, won the entire fortune--amounting to some forty dollars--of that guileless youth. After the game was finished, Mr. Oakhurst drew the youthful speculator behind the door and thus addressed him: "Tommy, you're a good little man, but you can't gamble worth a cent. Don't try it over again." He then handed him his money back, pushed him gently from the room, and so made a devoted slave of Tom Simson. There was a remembrance of this in his boyish and enthusiastic greeting of Mr. Oakhurst. He had started, he said, to go to Poker Flat to seek his fortune. "Alone?" No, not exactly alone; in fact (a giggle), he had run away with Piney Woods. Didn't Mr. Oakhurst remember Piney? She that used to wait on the table at the Temperance House? They had been engaged a long time, but old Jake Woods had objected, and so they had run away, and were going to Poker Flat to be married, and here they were. And they were tired out, and how lucky it was they had found a place to camp and company. All this the Innocent delivered rapidly, while Piney, a stout, comely damsel of fifteen, emerged from behind the pine-tree, where she had been blushing unseen, and rode to the side of her lover. (Excerpt from "The Outcasts of Poker Flats" by Francis Bret Harte) The inclusion of gambling and the fact that Tom Simpson and Piney Woods have to run away to marry because her father objects lets the reader know this story must take place fairly recently. in ancient Greece. in the future. in the American Old West. @bobbie21995

Extracts from Adam's Diary (excerpted) Translated from the original MS. by Mark Twain [NOTE.--I translated a portion of this diary some years ago, and a friend of mine printed a few copies in an incomplete form, but the public never got them. Since then I have deciphered some more of Adam's hieroglyphics, and think he has now become sufficiently important as a public character to justify this publication.--M. T.] Monday This new creature with the long hair is a good deal in the way. It is always hanging around and following me about. I don't like this; I am not used to company. I wish it would stay with the other animals. Cloudy to-day, wind in the east; think we shall have rain. ... Where did I get that word? ... I remember now-- the new creature uses it. Benjamin stood straight up on the court and yelled, "Stop!" Initially the coach. What do you think you're doing? "You can't stop the game!" but then he swiveled and saw Ben. He was covered in blood flowing. "Stop" was the last thing Ben yelled before he tipped wildly sideways and hit the floor with a disgusting thud and all his teammates rushed to stand around him and ask the question that they already knew the answer to, are you alright, no, no he wasn't. What is the problem with the sentence "What do you think you're doing?" It has a misplaced adjective. It is a fragment. It is a run-on sentence. It needs quotation marks.

This is a section of Matej's research paper about heart disease: There are many risk factors for heart disease. According to AnswersDisease.com, "Smoking is the biggest risk factor for heart attack." Matej uses quotation marks to show the direct quote he took from his source. If there weren't quotation marks around that sentence, the reader would know that Matej's information came from a different source cited later. Matej paraphrased the information rather than quoting it directly. Matej was lying about the information he found from the source. Excerpt from "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird" by Wallace Stevens Among twenty snowy mountains. The only moving thing Was the eye of the blackbird. A man and a woman and a blackbird Are one. The poet chooses to separate off sections of the poem with Roman numerals to enhance the theme by giving the reader a good place to stop reading. letting the reader know the subject is changing. separating each of the stories about the blackbirds. separating each of the 13 ways of looking at a blackbird. @bobbie21995

Now the dreadful winter was come upon them. In the forests, all summer long, the branches of the trees do battle for light, and some of them lose and die; and then come the raging blasts, and the storms of snow and hail, and strew the ground with these weaker branches. Just so it was in Packingtown; the whole district braced itself for the struggle that was an agony, and those whose time was come died off in hordes. All the year round they had been serving as cogs in the great packing machine; and now was the time for the renovating of it, and the replacing of damaged parts. There came pneumonia and grippe, stalking among them, seeking for weakened constitutions; there was the annual harvest of those whom tuberculosis had been dragging down. There came cruel, cold, and biting winds, and blizzards of snow, all testing relentlessly for failing muscles and impoverished blood. Sooner or later came the day when the unfit one did not report for work; and then, with no time lost in waiting, and no inquiries or regrets, there was a chance for a new hand. (Excerpt from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair) The main idea of the excerpt is even though the workers had jobs they got sick. people are susceptible to horrible diseases at all times. that winter is a hard time for trees and machinery. that employers do not care if their workers sicken and die. @bobbie21995 what about this
