First Question: X - 3 > - 9 I First Used Addition To Add 3 to both sides X > -6 And that's how I got my answer Is It Right ?

OpenStudy (joshawad):

yes

hartnn (hartnn):

correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Second Question -2x + 1≤ - 11 Then I Used Subtraction to subtract one from both sides -2x ≤ -12 Then I Divided negative two to both sides x ≤ 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Am I right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

close..but remember, when you divide/multiply by a negative number, it changes the inequality sign. -2x + 1 <= -11 (subtract 1) -2x <= -12 (divide by -2 and change the inequality sign) x >= 6

hartnn (hartnn):

when you divide by a negative quantity you flip the sign

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be x is greater then or equal to 6

hartnn (hartnn):

YES

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay here is another 2(x +5) > 8x -8 Then I subtracted 8x from both sides -6x + 10 > -8 Then I added 10 to both sides ' -6x > 2 Then I divided -6 from both sides x > -3 And sense I divided a negative you flip x < -3

hartnn (hartnn):

-6x +10 >-8 then you need to SUBTRACT

hartnn (hartnn):

10 FROM BOTH SIDES

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah I did I just accidentally wrote add did I get it right

hartnn (hartnn):

-6x > -18 x < -18/-6 x< 3 YES

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2(x + 5) > 8x - 8 -- distribute 2x + 10 > 8x - 8 -- subtract 8x 2x - 8x + 10 > -8 -- subtract 10 2x - 8x > -8 - 10 -- combine like terms -6x > -18 -- divide by -6 and change the sign x < 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2(x -3)≥ 5 – (x + 3) Distributive property -2x + 6 ≥ -5x + 3 add 5x to both sides 3x + 6 ≥ 3 subtract six 3x ≥ -3

hartnn (hartnn):

the right side is incorrect 5-(x+3) = 5 - x -3 = ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2(x - 3) >= 5 - (x + 3) -- distribute -2x + 6 >= 5 - x - 3 can you take it from here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I understand where I went wrong but i don't know how to work with the right side

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it helps, if you just have a sign before the parenthesis with no number, you can put 1 as the understood number. For example : -2(x - 3) >= 5 - (x + 3) if it helps you can do this.. -2x + 6 >= 5 - 1(x + 3)...then just distribute the -1 through the parenthesis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1x + 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is -1 * 3 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oppss lol -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly...-1x - 3....you can continue to leave the -1 beside the x if you want to. It will not change your answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay so.. -2x + 6 >= 5 - 1x - 3 then do I add -1 x to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, you can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay then It will look like this -1x + 6 >= 5 - 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then I subtract 5 - 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1x + 6 >= 5 - 3 you can subtract 5 - 3 now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but do not forget about your 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1x + 6 >= 5 - 3 -- combine like terms -1x + 6 >= 2 -- then subtract your 6 from both sides or you can do it this way -1x + 6 >= 5 - 3 (subtract 6 from both sides -1x >= 5 - 3 - 6 -- now combine like terms you can proceed either way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but do not forget that we want x positive...remember when dividing/multiplying by a negative, the inequality sign changes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1x >= 14 -1x < = 14

hartnn (hartnn):

5-3-6 = -4 actually

hartnn (hartnn):

-x > = -4 x < = 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh kay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

help.... 10 < –3x + 1 Idk how to do this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

subtract 1 from both sides and what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry had to do the laundry 11 < -3x

hartnn (hartnn):

10 < –3x + 1 10 -1 < -3x 9 < -3x ....
