Simplify the expression 11x − (2x2 + 8x)

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

I suppose you mean 2x^2 Well since 8x and 2x^2 don't combine, we can remove the parenthesis: 11x - 2x^2 + 8x They don't combine because 2x^2 has an exponent, therefore making it an unlike term with 8x. But 11x and 8x share the same variable, so tehy are like terms, so we can combine them: 11x + 8x = 19x Now we have: 19x - 2x^2 I doubt there is any more simplification in that since we don't know the value of x, so I would say this is our final answer.

11x - (2x^2 + 8x) -- distribute through the parenthesis 11x - 2x^2 - 8x -- combine like terms 3x - 2x^2

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

How did the 8x become negative? o:

OpenStudy (♪chibiterasu):

Aah, nvm.
