People here with experience in higher education: Why do universities not like it when students take more than 18 credits? @Loser66 @amistre64 @Callisto @primeralph @dan815 @satellite73 @hartnn @phi @TuringTest @abb0t @agent0smith @kelliegirl33 @shamil98 @Preetha @eliassaab @dmezzullo @Ashleyisakitty
It's not that they don't like it, they just don't suggest it. If you plan on attending graduate school, it may affect your GPA if you do poorly in your class(s)
Good question. You are able to take multiple courses, for a a cost. I believe its 20 max. The American school system doesnt care if you're smart. They just want your money.
For me, 30 credits per semester, 6 credits per courses. If you want to take more than that, just apply for it. I think you can take as many courses as you want, but make sure you can handle them all.
That's not entirely true, @Ashleyisakitty some schools have a fixed tuition if you are full time, here in the states 12-units is considered full time. But if you are <12 units, then they charge/ course unit.
Interesting. I didnt know all of this. That was my knowledge based off my local uni, UT.
more then 18 credits is considered a course overload. However, you can get permission from the school to take more then 18 credits.
@FutureMathProfessor It's because you'll graduate earlier and they'll lose money.
What if they have a rule saying that you must study at that school for at least x years? :P
Then you take all the classes early and spend the rest chasing freshman chicks.
This is more like academic advice! LOL http://openstudy.com/study#/groups/Academic%20Advice
If you all are interested in what's going on here, due to a bit of confusion in one of my courses, I apparently wasn't supposed to sit for 22 credits worth of classes this last semester, but by the materials I was given, it was apparent to me that I was supposed to sit for that many. I now am talking to the dean about it. Good thing I have all A's, right?
I don't understand. Why do they care?
I don't know. I got an E-mail saying "I was explicitly denied permission to register for that many, and it would be disappointing to see that I would try to circumvent the situation." However I was added to our materials list for 22 credits, something that only happens upon approval of the registrar.
Well, if nobody stopped you at the time of registration, it's not your problem. In most cases, the hold occurs when you're registering. not after. Go talk to your advisor; and take flowers along.
*if she's a lady and you're a guy only! Otherwise, just smile.
That is the case.
tuition is usually setup so that for an 18 credit hour semester they receive a certain amount of profit. If you go over 18 credit hours then you have to pay extra for it.
i took 21 credit hours a few semesters back ... got all As of course, and the workload still had me bored out of my mind .... but I had to pay extra for the extra credits.
You little bragger you! Haha I got all A's too this sem
