Platelets make up a relatively large percentage of blood components. When the wall of a blood vessel is ruptured, platelets adhere to collagen fibers in the connective tissue (which is exposed where the vessel ruptured) and release a substance that makes other nearby platelets sticky. As more platelets stick together, they form a functional plug that prevents excessive blood from leaving the vessel. If the rupture in the blood vessel is really severe, the platelet plug might be reinforced by a fibrin clot.

There are two pathways for blood clotting..one is intrinsic pathway and another is extrinsic pathway.extrinsic is related to tissue injury or trauma and intrinsic is related to the activation of some blood clotting factors by platelets and capillary endothelium.
