Solve the compound inequality, showing your work. Name the solution set and then draw the graph of the solution set. y - 2 < -5 or y - 2 > 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y - 2 < -5 or y - 2 > 5 so lets work with the first part: y - 2 < -5 we want to have y by itself, so +2 to both sides: y - 2 < -5 y - 2 +2 < -5 +2 y +0 < -5 +2 y < -3 now you try the same method for your side: y - 2 > 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would this be graphed?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2nd inequality: y – 2 > 5 add +2 to both sides y – 2 + 2 > 5 + 2 solve y > 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so first draw your number line. looking back at this eq: y < -3 it says that the value of y will be less than -3, so the 'less than' means we put an empty circle at the -3 and since y is less than -3 that means we shade the lie to the left of -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then I just put i full circle where '7' is since thats the second inequality?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good work on the simplifying the second inequality ^_^ we only put a 'full circle' when its 'greater than or eqaul to' and when 'less than or equal to' we have only a 'greater than' so at 7, it will be an empty circle

oh right, thanks for all the help i understand how to do this a lot better now.
