Larry is using an online calculator to calculate the outputs f(n) for different inputs n. The ordered pairs below show Larry's inputs and the corresponding outputs displayed by the calculator. (1, 5), (2, 9), (3, 13), (4, 17) Which of the following functions best represents the rule that the calculator uses to display the outputs? f(n) = 5n - 1 f(n) = 5n + 1 f(n) = 4n + 1 f(n) = 4n - 1

for each increase of 1 in the x value, the y value changes by how much?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good, so we know that 4 has to be in the answer equation. so that leaves us with f(n) = 4n + 1 or f(n) = 4n - 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a quick way to see which equation it is would be to plug in an ordered pair into the each of the 2 equations and see which equation is true

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(n) = 4n + 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it that one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(n) = 4n + 1 with ordered pair, (2, 9) 9 = 4(2) + 1 [TRUE] yep ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you can u help me with another one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea, post it up

The function f(x) is shown below. f(x) = (2)x+1 The function f(x) is shifted to the left by 13 units. Which of the following best represents the new function? f(x) = (2)x + 13 f(x) = (2)x + 14 f(x) = (2)x -12 f(x) = (2)x - 13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

make sense so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you recognize the x-y graph?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does the function f(x)=2x+1 make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kind've

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have 2x+1 so the number that is always attached with the 'x' will be the slope. so the slope is 2 the other number left is +1, the 1 is the y-intercept, so at +1 is where the line will cross the y-axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the question tells us that the line is moved to the left by 13, so I drew a new line representing that new line. and I drew that arow with th 13 over it to represent it moving to the left 13 units.
