Look up the Boston Tea Party, the Stamp Act and recall the saying, "Taxation without representation is tyranny."

The colonists lived under a monarchy- King George. They didn't have a voice in the matter. In a democracy, we elect representatives- members of Congress- to tell the government whether or not we are willing to pay the tax in question. Colonial Americans objected not so much to taxes, but to the fact that they had no say in the matter. From Wikipedia article entitled No Taxation Without Representation: "No taxation without representation" began as a slogan in the period 1763–1776 that summarized a primary grievance of the British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies. In short, many in those colonies believed the lack of direct representation in the distant British Parliament was an illegal denial of their rights as Englishmen, and therefore laws taxing the colonists (the kind of law that affects the most individuals directly), and other laws applying only to the colonies, were unconstitutional." In short, taxation without representation is tyranny, to coin a phrase.
