What they are trying to say is that you should work in the parenthesis first, which means adding 3 and 4. Yes i would agree with # 1

You are welcome. The first answer is the correct one. We evaluate parenthesis first which means add 3 plus 4 and then we do the exponent, which means square it. Both those steps are covered in the first answer.
