Explain how it is possible to have more than one mode in a set of data.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

mode is the most frequent of most popular... so image if you asked people to pick a number between 1 and 4 if you asked 20 people its possible that since its a choice activity that 2 or more numbers can be the mode... its not a calculation or determination of position. hope it makes sense

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Let's say the data is: 1,2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5 Which number appears most often? Well, we can say because there are two 2's and two 4's. Therefore there are two modes...2 and 4

thanks

OpenStudy (polaris_s0i):

this is a question of divisibility. if you have 2n numbers in your set you could have 2 modes, or 3n numbers giving 3 modes. etc. say you asked 12 people to pick their favorite number, you could get: a,a,a,a,b,b,b,b,c,c,c,c or a,a,a,b,b,b,c,c,c,d,d,d or a,a,b,b,c,c,d,d,e,e,f,f or a,a,a,a,a,a,b,b,b,b,b,b because 12 is divisible by 2,3,4, and 6
