Divide (10 × 1017) ÷ (100 × 1013). Express the answer in scientific notation.

You can also look at the problem like (1x10^1 x 1.017 x 10^3)/(1x10^2 x 1.013x10^3) Does that first step make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have not converted everything in tens. Multiply 1.017 by 1. It's 1.017 Now add the powers 1.017x 10^4/1.103x10^5 Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (phi):

If the first number is \[ 10 \times 10^{17} \] you should write it like this 10 x 10^17 in other words, use the ^ to show the 17 is an exponent. otherwise it just looks like 1017 (one thousand seventeen)
