hey I'm having some trouble with fractions. Can someone give me some advice? :)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Please start by posting the actual problem. Others will respond to it if they can advise you.

what is the question ????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well just like in general. Like I was wondering what the easiest way was to simplify the fraction first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See if it's divisible by two first then go from there

simplifying fractions...or just reducing them. Lets say you have the fraction 6/30....first you need to find a common denominator that will go into both numbers. So what goes into both 6 and 30 ? Two does, 3 does, 6 does. It is better to pick the highest one. So the highest number that goes into both numbers is 6. 6/30 ....6 goes into 6 how many times ? It goes in there 1 time. So your 6 turns into a 1. How many times does 6 go into 30 ? It goes in there 5 times. so your 30 changes to 5. Thus, making your reduced fraction 1/5. Even if you didn't use the highest common denominator, you could still do the problem, although you would have to reduce again. 8/12....highest common denominator is 4, but 2 is also a common denominator. Let me show you what happens if you do not use the highest common denominator and use 2 instead. 8/12....2 goes into 8 how many times ? It goes in there 4 times. How many times does 2 go into 12 ? It goes in there 6 times. Making your fraction 4/6. But this will reduce further. When you have 2 even numbers like this, it will reduce. 4/6 , with the common denominator of 2) reduces to 2/3. If you would have used 4 as your common denominator, you would have gotten 2/3 as your reduces fraction without having to reduce again. read some more... http://www.mathsisfun.com/simplifying-fractions.html
