Solve each inequality and graph the solution set on a number line X+1<5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + 1 < 5 -- subtract 1 from both sides x < 5 - 1 x < 4 open circle on 4, shading to the left. Learn this and it will help you in the future : if the inequality contains an equal sign, then it is a closed circle if the inequality has no equal sign, then it is an open circle < (less then) means shading to the left > (greater then) means shading to the right

you solve inequalities pretty much like equations except for when inequalities are divided/multiplied by a negative number, then the inequality sign changes

@kelliegirl33 Closed circle? Is that the same as a solid line?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are talking about graphing on a graph and not a number line. On a graph, if there is an equal sign, then it is a solid line If there is no equal sign, it is a dashed line

@kelliegirl33 Oh ok. I was thinking of the wrong thing. Thanks

no problem :)
