OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

A regular pentagonal prism has 9-cm base edges. A larger, similar prism of the same material has 36-cm case edges. How does each indicated measurement for the larger prism compare to the same measurement for the smaller prism? A)volume B) weight

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

the scaling factor of 1/4 affects the volume...

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

the base area of the smaller prism will be smaller. Volume = base area x height so the volume will be less... hope it helps

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

only issue is how do i find the height

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well you don't need to... as the question is asking which is affected.... the volume... or weight... and I'd say the volume... for the reason above... smaller base area in the smaller prism

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

how do i calculate the volume for a pentagonal prism

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

i am confused on what i need to do to solve for this problem and how to do it

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well the smaller measurements are 1/4 of the larger so in terms of base area the smaller will be (1/4)^2 smaller of 1/16 of the area of the large..

OpenStudy (highschoolmom2010):

ok so was that how i needed to do the part about the volume

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well then the volume scaling is (1/4)^3 = 1/64 the volume of the smaller prism should be 1/64 of the volume of the large one.
