Cloth making was an important activity, both wool and flax were spun into thread, and then woven into cloth. Spinning was an activity so associated with women that 'spinster' was in common usage as a word for a single woman until quite recently. The early colonies were very short of cloth, so spinning was a vital female task.
I suspect the mother taught the children how to read and write and they generally used the KJB Bible for this purpose. The father may teach the older children the ways of the world.
Women took care of the poultry and the dairy, they cared for the chickens and geese, and made butter and cheese.
