how do I pick a good college for me?
If you're currently going to high school, definitely talk to your academic advisors and your teachers. They know first hand how you like to work on things, your personality, and might have a good feeling about what schools might fit you better. They should at least have a few suggestions that will at least intrigue you. Some things you might want to consider before deciding is the cost of the college, the number of students, the surrounding area (climate, crime rate, nearby stores, etc.), what the housing situation will be (on/off-campus locations and relative prices), and whether or not they have a strong program that you're interested in. However, from my experience, many colleges are fairly similar for undergraduates in terms of academics. There are of course some outliers that are either very good or very bad, but most places will have the similar classes, similar students, and similar professors.
ok thanks ill keep that in mind...but i go to online high school and they dont help with colleges unless i ask about the college they have which i dont want to go to at all
Hm. That's kind of unfortunate. I guess my next suggestion to find some colleges would be to go to a website such as http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges or https://www.utexas.edu/world/univ/state/ just to get a list of universities, their approximate locations, and an idea of how respectable that particular university is. Then when you have a list of universities that might interest you, do some more thorough research on those particular schools, and slowly whittle down your list to something reasonable.
are there any online test i could take that would help me narrow done the types of things i like to do...i remember in my old high school we took a test that asked us what kindof things we liked to do and then it told us what type of jobs would be good for us to have.
You can try using those as well. If you need to figure out what you want to actually do with your life, that's something that I believe that you can only figure out by trying different things that you think you might like. But by all means, you can use these little quizzes to try and narrow down the field a little bit.
I have a couple things in mind that i would love to have a job in but I dont want to start college and waste money on something that may not work out for me in the long run..i guess that is my main problem
That's something else you need to consider. I'm afraid that's one of the questions that you'll have to answer yourself though. For some, the price of college is worth, and for others it isn't. It depends a lot on the person and what they intend to do with their life.
You actually have a little more time than you think. The first two years of education are largely general ed. No matter what degree, you have a year that is the same and another that is mostly the same. Science based degrees will focus more on math and science the second year, where as everything else allows for a wider range of things. This means that if you go to a decent school for a few things that interest you, you have a couple years to really narrow it down. In those two years, talk to the professors and upper level students in the fields that interest you. Also contact any professional organizations that deal with them. They usually have information on the field that they hand out or have on their web site. You may be able to tour a business in a field that interests you. Many of these things you can also do in high school, but if you are still undecided, it is not the end of the world! Just get into a good school at that point and keep learning!
Thanks That really helps alot. Now I'm not as worried about it.
And here is a list of career fit tests that seem to be reviewed, rather than just random things on the web: http://jobsearch.about.com/od/careertests/a/careertests.htm
Oh, and I almost forgot! Education Portal has a section of videos by people in the HR field about doing job searches, interviews, etc. https://education-portal.com/pages/Career_Field_and_Degree_Program_Videos.html
