Could depend on retailer policy. Does the retailer apply sales tax before applying 20% discount. Some do. If the problem doesn't state looks at some sample problems, if not make an assumption. Here is the possible out comes. 1. Charges sales tax before discount . Tax is $16.88 X.05 = .844 retailer might round up for 85, might charge .84 discount would be $16.88 X .20 =$3.38 (rounding up) Total cost $16.88 + .85 -3.38 or $14.35 (maybe a penny more or less) 2. Charges sales tax after didcount (preferred retailer) Discount cost: $16.88-$3.38=$13.50 now plus 5% sales tax on the sale or 1.05 X $13.50 = $14.18 again depending on "rounding" policy.
