The Expansion of Islam Help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of the following is true about slavery in early Muslim society? a. Slavery was outlawed early. b. Only Jews and Christians were slaves. c. Slaves made up the lowest social class. d. Only dhimmis could rise up out of slavery. I think it is C.

OpenStudy (zale101):

in a Muslim society, Slavery is forbidden, anything that regards capturing a free man is considered illegal in Islam. It's forbidden in either capturing a slave, or selling a slave. Slaves were considered to be prisoners or captives of war, but in the Quran, it doesn't mention that slavery is said to be done on prisoners or captives of war. But in the Islamic society this is used as a punishment for outlawed (criminals) people. "No prophet shall acquire captives, unless he participates in the fighting. You people are seeking the materials of this world, while GOD advocates the Hereafter. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise. " Quran: [8:67]

OpenStudy (zale101):

Choice A would be correct, but i can't understand why it says it was outlawed early, Don't know for sure if they mean that it was outlawed before Islam or not.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. I knew I was unsure because at the bottom were farmers..so I was like hm...thanks though. And that confused me too! Being outlawed early!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I also have one more that I am unsure of for now...if it's okay.

OpenStudy (zale101):

Np, Choice C would be correct if they were referring to an Arab society, not an Islamic society. No religion allows slavery.

OpenStudy (zale101):

well, maybe some religions

OpenStudy (zale101):

i shouldn't be stereotypical about that

Erasmus, a Roman Catholic priest, is remembered for criticizing which of the following? a. Corruption among clergy b. Indulgences and penance c. Biblical authority d. Nobility privileges I don't know what to pick, but this is what I know of Erasmus. Desiderius Erasmus was a Dutch Roman Catholic priest. He spent many years in Italy studying Greek, and he also lived in England, where his close friend Thomas More was also a leader of the humanist movement. Erasmus, who was a very learned man, became the first editor of the Greek New Testament. In his theological works, he criticized the papacy and singled out corruption in the Church. He corresponded with Martin Luther, and many contemporaries and later historians believed that Erasmus had inspired Luther, at least to some degree. In later life, though, Erasmus maintained an independent position. He struggled to establish a middle ground between Catholics and Protestants. So...he criticized the papacy. I was trying to look to see if any of the choices means the same thing as papacy and I think the closest is C, but I don't know. ~phew~

OpenStudy (zale101):

Erasmus had inspired Martin Luther and Luther was against Catholicism because they used to sell people indulgence to eliminate their bad deeds and start fresh. When people commit crimes, they went to the the church, and bought Indulgences to receive sacramental absolution from their guiltiness actions. The Catholic priests used this for their advantage and creating indulgence myth to keep their business going..Therefore, when people start to do bad deeds they buy indulgence to erase it. Both Erasmus and MArtin luther had these conflict going during their time and that's how protestant was initiated.
