!!! One Medal Question !!!

OpenStudy (tanya123):

- State the competitive exclusion principle. - Identify three different types of consumers. Name an example of each type. - Describe the role of decomposers in food webs.

OpenStudy (petiteme):

The competitive exclusion principle, sometimes referred to as Gause's Law of competitive exclusion or just Gause's Law, states that two species that compete for the exact same resources cannot stably coexist.

OpenStudy (petiteme):

The first level consists of primary consumers that eat only plants, also known as herbivores. An example of a primary consumer is a grasshopper. Secondary consumers prey upon primary consumers and are often called carnivores. Tertiary consumers are carnivores that eat secondary consumers. A complete example food chain would be: a primary consumer (grasshopper) is eaten by a secondary consumer (frog) which is then eaten by a tertiary consumer (hawk).

OpenStudy (petiteme):

Decomposers and scavengers break down dead plants and animals. They also break down the waste (poop) of other organisms. Decomposers are very important for any ecosystem. If they weren't in the ecosystem, the plants would not get essential nutrients, and dead matter and waste would pile up.
