I'm signed up for an introductory piano class in college. I don't know the first thing about playing a piano. I have played the flute in the past and I can read sheet music. I thought since flute music is sometimes composed as an accompaniment to piano music, I can pick up how to read piano sheet music. But now I'm starting to get qualms about it. Any suggestions for what I should do?

Switch to a brass instrument.

Also how long did you play flute?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

About 3 years, one year in elementary school, two years in middle school.

I think it'd be good to give it a try. I play piano and once you get the hang of reading the sheet music and playing at the same time, it gets wicked easy. The good thing about starting fresh with a new instrument is that it gives you an opportunity to expand your horizons. That, and it's nice to simply know how to play piano because it sounds really pretty. What I did was, I learned how to play with just my left hand first, which is the "bass" hand, or the hand that will be carrying all the solid chords, and then I slowly learned how to include my left hand, which is the hand for the main melody. Overall, it only took me a few months to really grasp the concept of it, and being self taught, I was able to learn at my speed. So yeah, you should give it a try:) Worst case scenario is that you'll be a little stuck on fluency at first.

learn scales and practice scales to start training your hands then go to a music store and get a beginers book for piano and those wll guide you and teach you everything.
