OpenStudy (smileyface14):

compare renewable and nonrenewable energy sources and discuss the effects of each on biodiversity?

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

well dam is renewable energy and coal is not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wood can be replanted as trees and are therefor renewable. Crude oil accumulates over a long period and cannot be reproduced after use.

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

any thing that take to long to grow isn't really renewable

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

example fossil fuel. fossil fuel are made from processes of plants and animals.

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

but it takes many years before plants and dead animals become fossil fuel.

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

is this correct?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Renewable sources can be renewed, of course, meaning we can keep on using it without having to explore for more. Non-renewable cannot be renewed, forcing us to keep exploring and usually deforest or dig for more. They also leave behind harmful things when used.

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Because they are chemicals, they leave behind side-products. These are usually harmful to the environment.

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

but then we can say that fossil fuel is renewable energy right?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Fossil fuel is not renewable for the reason I said. Once we use it in combustion, it's gone, leaving harmful CO2. We have to get more fuel.

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

what i learn is that if any energy takes years to replenish is not consider renewable

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

I guess you can remember it that way. Then fossil fuel is not renewable :)

OpenStudy (uh60blackhawk):

yes i know that but what you wrote sounds like you're saying that anything that can be replenish is renewable.

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Yes... Technically fossil fuels are not replenishable since we are not getting anymore dinosaurs or plants down there for billions or years again.
